city of Ivanić-Grad aims
at younger generations
of tourists via innovative
communication channels.
I
nspired by the corn mazes from Central
Europe, the “Hrvatica” Corn Maze in
Posavina was first planted and presented to
the public in Dubrovčak Lijevi in 2022. The
layout of the maze was based on a motif of
a Posavina folk costume specific for the area
where the maze is located. Local landscape
architects and land surveyors designing the
maze and transferring the design into the field
took part in the creation of the maze. The corn
field is cultivated by a local farmer who clears
the corn from the plot after project completion.
A local association “Udruga Prijatelji baštine”
and local historians and ethnologists took part
in the creation of the educational aspect.
Ideas were gathered and transformed into
conceptual sketches and then the conceptual
design of the maze. Using the folk costume’s
embroidery as inspiration for the concept,

adjusting it and interweaving it with the landscape resulted in a presentation and intonation
of the local spirit, all the while preserving the
tradition of spatial development and thus promoting sustainable design of the modern-day
environment. A sharp, bold, symmetrical and
geometrical cultural motif supports and highlights the landscape of Posavina known for its
orderly cornfield patterns which stand in stark
contrast to the organic channels of the Sava
River. All three mazes were designed by
Kristina Komšo, a landscape architect.
